Read Five Before I Buy One | Bookmas Day Four

My to-be-read pile isn't out of control, but it's certainly true that I don't need to buy any books for a little while. The wonderful Read Susie Read has been challenging herself to read 5 books that are already on her bookshelves before she allows herself to buy 1 new book and I think it's a fabulous idea. Honestly I feel like I'm cheating a little bit doing this in December when all of my pennies are going towards gifts for some very special people in my life as opposed to gifts to myself for no particular reason, but there are a lot of sales that are tempting me and I should definitely not be buying anything for myself.

Here are the five books I'll be reading before I'm allowed to buy any more. They're purposely all books I'm really looking forward to so that reading doesn't become a chore because that's never a good thing, and there's a bit of variety too because I tend to choose books based on my mood at the time.

1. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
2. The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell
3. The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton
4. The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith
5. The Murders in the Rue Morgue and Other Tales by Edgar Allan Poe

I figured that there should be a bit of crime in there because there's something about the Winter that makes me want to delve into a genre that I don't read enough. Perhaps I'm cheating a little again because I've included my current read, Station Eleven - but I'm not far in yet so I think it still counts. There's also The Bone Clocks because I'm incredibly intrigued and as The Luminaries was my favourite book of the year I absolutely must read some more Eleanor Catton as soon as possible!

Is your to-be-read shelf looking a little full at the moment, or do you prefer to buy books and read them before picking up a new one?

  1. The Silkworm is absolutely brilliant - such a great read! My read list is bursting, and I've still got my eyes on a few more - I want to read The Miniaturist next.

  2. Sounds like a great challenge! I've got a shelf just for to-read-books - I'm only allowed to buy new books if there's room for them :-D

  3. I really need to implement this rule. I just keep collecting books, like they're stamps or something. When I moved house in July I swear about 75% of my boxes were books. *shame*

  4. I need to implement this one! I am so tempted to buy more books, but I really need to save my money! Station Eleven is a book I really want to read :)

  5. This is such a great idea, I think I might have to do this in the new year. Although I have so many books on my to-read pile I should probably make it read ten before buying one... Though I'm not sure I could! Thanks for sharing this idea! xx
